ATM2 Utilized for Treatment of Back Pain

The ATM2 is a relatively new device in the field of physical therapy whose primary purpose is to restore pain free range of motion (ROM) in the spine, whether it be the low back, mid-back or neck. Active therapeutic movement (ATM) is a process whereby isometric exercise of the spine in a stabilized, pain free position is utilized to regain the motion of the spine apart from pain.

The theory behind the ATM2 is that if we can stabilize the pelvis and low back so that painful, compensatory movement patterns are avoided, then pain free, normal movement patterns can occur. The neuromuscular system can then “reset” to a normal movement. The beauty of the device is that it is only utilized when pain reduction occurs, thereby minimizing any deleterious effects.

A study by Clare Lewis PT, published October 2006, showed significant LBP reduction and improved ROM after utilizing the ATM2. There is increasing clinical evidence for its efficacy.
