Aquatic Therapy

Welcome to our Aquatic Therapy Program!
  • Your first appointment will be an evaluation only, you will not be getting in the pool at this visit. At this appointment your therapist will design an aquatic plan to address your physical needs.
  • Swimming skills are not necessary for participation in Aquatic Therapy.
  • The pool is kept at a comfortable 86 degrees, is 3.0-4.5 feet deep, and is indoors.
  • We have a chair lift that can enable us to safely get you in and out of the pool if needed. The lift has a weight limit of up to 350lbs.
  • Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to your first pool appointment.
  • Do NOT enter the pool until your therapist is present and directs you to do so.
  • Please abstain from wearing any lotion, perfume or oil on your skin.
  • You will need to bring your own towel.
  • Water Shoes or some type of slip-on shoe is recommended.
  • Women should wear a freshly washed one-piece bathing suit or a tankini style bathing suit. If you don’t have a bathing suit you can wear shorts and a dark colored t-shirt. If you only have a bikini, please wear a t-shirt cover up. Men should wear freshly washed shorts-style bathing suit. Changing area and lockers are available in the pool area. We recommend you bring your own lock. Bathing suits not washed after being in a lake or ocean can cause black algae in the pool.
  • Contacts, glasses and hearing aids may be worn in the pool, as you will not be going under the water, but this will be at your discretion.
  • There may be other people in the water with you. Please respect each others’ privacy and do not ask the therapist or patients why they are being treated.
  • You will not be allowed in the pool if you have an open cut/wound or unhealed surgery incision. Unfortunately we are unable to facilitate patients with a urinary catheter in the aquatic program.
  • Please call us to reschedule your appointment if you have experienced diarrhea within 24 hours of your scheduled appointment.

Aquatic Physical Therapy is the evidence-based and skilled practice of physical therapy in an aquatic environment by a physical therapist, or a physical therapist assistant under the supervision of a physical therapist. Aquatic Physical Therapy includes but is not limited to treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, health, wellness and fitness of patient/client populations in an aquatic environment with or without the use of assistive, adaptive, orthotic, protective, or supportive devices and equipment.
The unique properties of the aquatic environment enhance interventions for patients/clients across the age span with musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary diseases, disorders, or conditions.
Aquatic Physical Therapy interventions are designed to improve or maintain:
  • function
  • aerobic capacity/endurance conditioning
  • balance, coordination and agility
  • body mechanics and postural stabilization
  • flexibility
  • gait and locomotion
  • relaxation
  • muscle strength, power, and endurance.

Interventions used in Aquatic Physical Therapy include, but are not limited to, therapeutic exercise, functional training, breathing strategies, physical agents and mechanical modalities using the properties of water and techniques unique to the aquatic environment.
